The Sac Joaquin Section crowned its Division I and Division II girl’s individual tennis champions on Friday, with the St. Francis Troubadours and the Granite Bay Grizzlies taking home the bulk of the hardware.
In Division I doubles played at the Brenda Athletic Club in Turlock, St. Francis’ Monica Yassear and Ashlyn Schmitgen defeated their fellow St. Francis teammates Annie Sompayrac and Tessa Sandoval 6-1, 6-2.
Schmitgen and Sandoval teamed up last year to win the doubles titles, making it a repeat performance for Schmitgen.
Granite Bay swept the Division II championships held at Johnson Ranch Racquet Club in Roseville. Grizzlies senior Kammy Kecki captured her first section tile cruising to a 6-3, 6-1 win over Bella Vista’s Rachel Putty.
Kammy’s sister Karolina Kecki was the Division II section champion in 2008 and 2009.
In doubles it was the Granite Bay sister tandem of Chloe and Lily Forlini prevailing 6-4, 6-3 over Roseville’s Ada Ukaeogbu and Bianca Luna. For the Forlini girls it was their third straight section title.
Division I and Division II girl’s team tennis playoff matches will resume on Monday, with semi-finals set for Wednesday, and section championship on Friday.
